It is located adjacent to King George Square, where the rectangular City Hall has its main entrance. The City Hall also has frontages and entrances in both Ann Street and Adelaide Street.. The lions were designed to form part of a King George V memorial, following the death of the monarch in 1936. Following this event, the area in front of City Hall, known as Albert Street Square as it was largely composed of Albert Street itself, was widened and renamed King George Square in tribute. Part of this tribute included the commission.
